Can't support you on this if the opposition goes wider than to the media hoop-la surrounding the event. Despite a few errors of judgment in modern times, the monarchy has a place in Britain and much of the free world. The Royal Family carries out many duties attractively and effectively. Imagine the same roles filled by an elected "head of state," possibly nominated in the first place by an elite with political power and motives. I'm mindful, for instance, of Prince William's recent visit to earthquake-ravaged Christchurch and the scene of the Pike River mining disaster. He acquitted himself well and reassured a host of troubled people that their plight wasn't unimportant to the rest of the world.
