SEVEN IS EIGHT

BBC RADIO 7 will celebrate it's eighth birthday next Wednesday. Since its launch the flagship digital channel has been broadcasting quality spoken word programs in all genres and has seen off rivals like OneWord (I still miss that station). And although the fortunes of DAB Radio have been up and down, full switch over from analogue to digital now looks unlikely until 2015 and more likely 2020, the station has built up a strong and loyal audience.

Here are 8 facts about Radio 7

2. Tony Hancock was voted the greatest radio comedian ever in a poll for the launch of BBC 7.

3. The first comedy broadcast by BBC7 on 15th December was Knowing Me, Knowing You.

4. Initially BBC 7 was broadcast 18 hours a day.

5.BBC 7 began 24 hour broadcasting - as a first birthday present to to listeners - in  December 2003.

6. BBC 7 became Radio 7 in October 2008

7. According to RAJAR, Radio 7 first hit the million mark in March 2010's RAJARs.
