BOND 23 - THE LATEST RUMOURS

Sam Mendes is being touted as the director of the new James Bond film - and far from being any old rumour this one has legs and has been reported widely in the UK press.

Mendes, who is married to Kate Winslet, is seen as a thoughtful director who switched from overseeing the Donmar Warehouse theatre in London to making such complex psychological films as American Beauty and Jarhead.

It is hoped that the film will begin production as early as June with an eye to a 2011 release. However, the difficulties that are now facing MGM, which put itself up for sale in November, mean there is an element of uncertainty about the project.

The interesting thing about all this is that Michael Wilson has said that previous movie, QOS was to much action and not enough plot. It is hoped among Bond fans that the series will get back on track. Casino Royale was a successful reboot (even if it didn't please all die hard Bond fans with the casting of Daniel Craig) but QOS was dire.
