This episode from the 1968 series is typical of the entire run in that it stuck remarkably close to Conan Doyle's original story. Peter Cushing, who first played the great detective in Hammer's 1958 Hound of the Baskervilles , is Holmes and Nigel Stock provides a solid Watson.
Modern viewers may find this series a little stagey for their liking but it's well worth sticking with and Cushing's Sherlock Holmes is a recreation that even Doyle would have liked. The actor gives us a studio, serious man and yet one that reacts with a childlike excitement when a case gets his interest. There's a great scene between Holmes and Watson in which Holmes is delighted but overwhelmed when Watson gets him some tobacco for Christmas.
All of the BBC Cushing Sherlock Holmes are available on DVD and are well worth seeking out.
