Another icon of character acting passes on.
He gave memorable performances in scores of films, refusing to be typed. Besides war movies, he appeared in Westerns ("The Last Frontier," "Chato's Land"), musicals ("Kiss Me Kate," "Oklahoma!"), science fiction ("Planet of the Apes," "Them"), dramas ("The Asphalt Jungle," "The Shawshank Redemption") and comedies ("Mr. O'Malley and Mrs. Malone," "The Great Diamond Robbery.")
Mr Whitmore was 87 and died after a brief battle with lung cancer.

Great actor. Did he expire in the land of tea and snorkers, or the land of dogs and sliders? Just curious, I haven't seen an obit yet.
I remember him from several movies. I always thought he was very good, very believable. Sorry to hear of his passing.
Really liked him in "Them!" and "Shawshank".
