THE BEST OF ROY OF THE ROVERSTHE 1980'S

Titan Books

Growing up there was only one football team that truly mattered and that was Melchester Rovers. The team were ahead of their time and their player/manager Roy Race, a ever youthful player who had first played in the 1950's, was a superstar footballer who had a fame that David Beckam can only dream of. Racey's missus wasn't made out of plastic either - granted her curves were created on paper from three colours but they weren't plastic.

I first met the character in the pages of Tiger Comic but this collection stems from the 1980's when the character had his own spin off comic. The character actually first saw print in 1954 in Tiger and continually published until 1993 when, for some weird reason British kids seemed to largely stop reading comics.
The character's appearance changed with the times as you can see from the very first image of Roy Race from Tiger comic and the 1980's version.

Left - is a page from Tiger's 1974 season.

But back to this graphic novel collection from the 1980 season. The strips, all in colour, is bursting with the usual football action as well as the thriller plot that saw Roy Race shot by an assassin.

Top notch nostalgia that made me feel all gooey inside.
